COCONUT BALLS for a Good Cause

L-użu tal-Matematika fil-ħajja ta’ kuljum – dan kien il-ħsieb wara l-idea li minnha beda l-proġett kollu…il-proġett Coconut Balls for a Good Cause, mtella’ fl-iskola Sekondarja tal-Kulleġġ Santa Margerita, Verdala.

Il-ħsieb kien li lil dawn l-istudenti tal-Year 9 CCP noffrulhom opportunitajiet differenti fejn jużaw il-matematika, bħal kejl, użin, flus, riċetti etċ.  Imma minn idea żgħira nħoloq proġett wiesgħa u ħolistiku li ġabar fih diversi suġġetti.

Bdejna billi sibna riċetta tal-coconut balls online u flimkien ħdimna l-ammonti ta’ ingredjenti li għandna bżonn biex nagħmlu ammonti kbar, ‘il fuq minn 200 waħda.

Din ir-riċetta imbagħad għaddiet fil-lezzjoni tal-Malti fejn flimkien ma’ Ms. Elaine Zahra, l-istudenti qalbu ir-riċetta għall-Malti, ħolqu u pprintjaw bookmarks bir-riċetta li mbagħad tqassment mal-bejgħ tal-Coconut balls, kif ukoll iddokumentaw il-proċess li bih isiru l-coconut balls permezz ta’ mijiet ta’ ritratti li mbagħad ingħaqdu f’video stop motion.

Sadanittant l-idea li l-coconut balls ser jinbigħu waqt il-parents day waslet għand l-għalliema tal-arti, Ms. Leanne Lewis, li għenet lill-istess studenti joħolqu poster biex jirreklamaw il-bejgħ.

Lura fil-lezzjonijiet tal-matematika, aħna l-għalliema Ms. Marica Abela u Ms. Dorienne Grech, ippreparajna lill-istudenti biex inżuru is-supermarket u mmorru nixtru l-ingredjenti neċessarji. Waqt li konna hemmhekk l-istudenti segwew ukoll Maths Trail qasira, fejn kellhom ikejlu pakketti taċ-ċereal, jaħdmu l-kontijiet u jiddeċiedu bejn offerti varji li minn żmien għal żmien joffru s-supermarkets.  Hawnhekk nixtiequ nirringrazzjaw lill-management tac-Chain Supermarket Fgura li laqagħna fil-ħanut tiegħu kif ukoll ipprovdielna xi ingredjenti b’xejn għal dan il-proġett.

Il-qofol tal-proġett kompla fil-laboratorji tal-home management, fejn grazzi għall-għalliema Ms. Karen Abela u Ms. Elizabeth Zahra, l-istudenti ħadmu fi-gruppi biex ippreparaw u ppakjaw il-coconut balls – li żgur ġew tajbin għax waqt il-parents’ day inbiegħu kollha. J

Kienu l-istudenti li ddeċidew xi prezz ser jinbiegħu il-coconut balls, u din ħolqot diskussjoni interessanti fil-klassi tal-Maths. Bil-flus li nġabru nxtara bukkett fjuri artifiċjali li ġie ppreżentat lill-istatwa tal-Kunċizzjoni li għadha kemm saret ġdida fid-dar tal-anzjani ta’ Bormla.  Dan il-ġest sar biex jibqa’ bħala tifkira tax-xogħol ta’ dawn l-istudenti u biex fl-istess ħin igawduh ir-residenti ukoll.

Ma żorniex id-dar tal-anzjani biss biex nwasslu l-fjuri imma sakemm konna hemm l-istudenti kellhom kwestjonarju żgħir x’jimlew ma’ uħud mir-residenti biex l-istatistika li tinġabar minnu issa tintuża ’l quddiem fil-lezzjonijet tal-matematika.  L-istudenti imbagħad qattgħu ftit ħin ieħor jitkellmu mal-anzjani u dawn tal-aħħar vera apprezzaw il-kumpanija tagħhom.

Il-proġett mbagħad ingħalaq fil-lezzjonijiet tal-ingliż fejn flimkien ma’ Ms. Diana Carabott, l-istudenti iddokumentaw dak kollu li għaddew minnu biex fl-aħħar mill-aħħar kitbu rapport biex jiġi ppublikat fil-magażin annwali tal-iskola.

Kollox beda minn ħsieb żgħir diskuss bejn żewġ għalliema, u żviluppa proġett ħolistiku li ninsabu ċerti li minnu l-istudenti ħadu ħafna – u dan grazzi għal dawk kollha li għenu b’xi mod jew ieħor, u fuq kollox għall-istudenti stess li daħlu bi ħġarhom għal din l-esperjenza.

Kien il-mod li bih il-ftit ta’ kulħadd ingħaqad flimkien f’dan il-proġett biex ir-riżultat finali kien suċċess. U dan kollu kien ukoll apprezzat minn dawk preżenti waqt ir-raba’ Seminar Annwali Tikka Matematika, li minn hawn nirringrazzjaw li għoġobhom jivvutaw għall-proġett Coconut Balls for a Good Cause, biex finalment dan ġie ippreżentat bl-unur Matematikka Gold Award, propju fl-ewwel edizzjoni tiegħu.

Verdala Math Trail 2018

The Verdala Math Trail has now become an anticipated annual event at St Margaret College Secondary School Verdala.  On Friday 19th April 2018, in groups of 5, all the Year 9 students were engaged in a full day of mathematics tasks based in everyday life.

Students had the opportunity to appreciate maths as a necessary skill in the day-to-day running activities, such as recipes and cooking, tiling, measuring and designing scale drawings, deciding upon best offers and deals, finding the area and volume of materials required for construction, calculating speed and statistics, etc.  They also had a try at playing mathematical board games, creating artistic patterns and using digital mathematical assistive technologies.

Students also appreciated the value of team-work, as they worked in groups and their team effort and behaviour contributed to the final mark obtained per group.  The groups’ tasks were then corrected by the Maths Department teachers and the winning team was declared. Each member, of the winning team Celsius was presented with a blue tooth mini speaker as a prize, while all participating students were awarded a certificate of participation.

It was a successful day, which all students enjoyed and which helped them appreciate the value of mathematics, when they applied what they learnt in class in everyday life situations.  Big thanks goes to the teachers in the Mathematics department for the organisation of the trail activities and to all the staff at school for their help and support in the smooth running of the day.  Finally thanks to the school’s SMT for believing in this activity and making it possible year in year out.
