German from home during 14th week of school closure

Dear students,

The moment we have all been waiting for has arrived. It’s the final week of this scholastic year; believe it or not, we managed to survive fourteen whole weeks of home schooling! Gut gemacht! 🙂

Year 9

The chapter Das Haus comes to an end by revising an important grammar point: the Dativ. We referred to it in the previous chapter Unterwegs in der Stadt, and we are using it again in this final lesson. By the end of this week, you should be able to build sentences about anything that can be found in your room, using the Dativ case, eg. Das Poster hängt an der Wand, or Das Buch liegt auf dem Tisch. Kindly listen to my video lesson and do the following HW tasks. These are the required files to download:

  1. Video: Yr9 – 22.06.20 (explanation)
  2. Die Wechselpräpositionen (notes)
  3. Wo ist die Katze? (HW)
  4. Mein Zimmer beschreiben (HW)
  5. Wo ist was? (HW)

Year 10

Following last week’s lesson about Technologie, whereby we learnt vocabulary related to the computer, smartphones and internet, and you even wrote about the use of digital media in your everyday lives, we can now discuss some of the perils found online. Is the computer a brilliant invention or a ticking time bomb? How can one use the smartphone safely and protect himself from cyberbullying? These questions can be answered after watching my video lesson and working this week’s assigned tasks. Please download the following material:

  1. Cybermobbing und Facebook (notes & HW)
  2. Surfen mit Smartphones (notes)
  3. Der Computer (HW)
  4. E-Mail Freundschaft (HW)

I wish to thank all of you for your cooperation and for keeping in touch during these fourteen weeks.  May I take this opportunity to wish you all happy summer holidays. Have fun, enjoy yourselves, but stay safe! See you back in September! 🙂

Kind regards,

M. Abela Bugeja

German from home during 13th week of school closure

Dear students,

It’s our thirteenth week of home schooling – the week before last! Well done for making it this far, despite all the struggles that these three months have brought about. As the German proverb goes, “Harte Arbeit zahlt sich aus” (Hard work pays off)! 🙂

Year 9

We may continue with our chapter Das Haus. This week we are focusing on one particular room; probably it’s your absolute favourite one from all the rooms at home. I am here referring to Das Schlafzimmer or as we call it Mein Zimmer. By the end of this week you will be able to describe your room and its furniture / furnishings, state if you have your own room and how you spend your time there, and write about any improvements which you would like to see. You will also read short texts about other teenagers’ point of view. Thus, for this week’s topic, you need to download the following material:

  1. Video: Yr9 – 15.06.20 (explanation)
  2. Powerpoint: Mein Zimmer (notes)
  3. Patrick und Tina (HW)
  4. Jugendliche beschreiben ihr Zimmer (HW)
  5. Schreiben: Mein Haus & mein Zimmer (HW)

Year 10

It’s a brand new week and with it comes our last chapter. It’s a very brief one and two weeks would be enough to cover the most important points. I normally reveal the name of the chapter here in my message, however this time I am doing it differently. I need you to watch my recorded video, which begins with a very cool song – a song that describes exactly the contents of our last topic. Thus, it is required from you to download the following files:

  1. Video: Yr 10 – 15.06.20 (explanation)
  2. Durchgehend online (lyrics – CW)
  3. Computerdeutsch (notes)
  4. Medienkonsum (HW)
  5. Jugendliche und digitale Medien (HW)

Once you hand in your work, I will get back to you individually, because I know that “Every student can learn, just not on the same day or in the same way.” – George Evans.

Sincerely,

M. Abela Bugeja

German from home during 12th week of school closure

Dear students,

Welcome to another week of German from home. I am sending you a big round of applause for your efforts and for keeping in touch on a regular basis. Always put your heart into your work and do not worry about making mistakes. Mistakes are proof that you are trying!

Year 9

We may now start with our final chapter, which is mostly revision. I am sure you covered the topic Das Haus in the Middle School. Well, during these next three weeks, we shall revise the most important vocabulary around the theme “Home & Home Area”. Please watch my recorded video to recall the basic phrases you need for this week’s HW. Kindly download the following files:

  1. Video: Yr9 – 08.06.20 (explanation)
  2. Hören: im Maklerbüro (HW – listening comprehension)
  3. Mein Haus (HW)

Year 10

We may round off the chapter Gesund Leben. Having good health is something we all want, therefore this week is all about encouraging our family and friends to keep fit and healthy. By revising the Imperative, we will be able to give health-related tips and informal health advice (Ratschläge geben). In order to do this week’s tasks, it is a must to watch the video with explanation on how to form the Imperative of the Du-Form in German. Kindly download the following files:

  1. Video: Yr 10 – 08.06.20 (explanation)
  2. Ratschläge geben (notes)
  3. Gute Tipps (HW)

I look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,

M. Abela Bugeja

German from home during 11th week of school closure

Dear students,

I hope this message finds you and your families well. We are almost at the end of this scholastic year. Some may have seen it as a blessing, others as a curse. Whatever the circumstances, remember that the struggle you’re in today, is developing the strength you need for tomorrow.

Year 9

This week we are ending the chapter Unterwegs in der Stadt by focusing on Einladungen (invitations). How do we ask our friends out in German? What are the typical German phrases used when we have someone over for lunch or dinner? How should one write a good invitation? By the end of this week you should be able to answer the above three questions, only if you watch my recorded video and work out the tasks I have assigned. Thus, you need to download the following files:

  1. Video: Yr9 – 01.06.20 (explanation)
  2. Einladungen: mündlich (notes)
  3. Einladungen: schriftlich (notes)
  4. Auf eine Einladung antworten (HW)
  5. Schreibe eine Einladung (HW)
  6. Dankesbrief (HW)

Year 10

Over the last two weeks we learnt the basic vocabulary we need to help us make a conversation in German at the doctor’s clinic. Now it’s time to proceed to the next sub-topic: Gesund Essen. We will explore different eating habits and analyse what is healthy (gesund) and what’s not (ungesund). From a cultural point of view, we will read about the Germans’ food-related traits. Do they maintain a healthy eating lifestyle? Please watch my short video clip and work out this week’s assigned tasks. You need to download the following files:

  1. Video: Yr 10 – 01.06.20 (explanation)
  2. Essgewohnheiten (notes/CW)
  3. Gesund oder ungesund (HW)
  4. SEC 2016: Cloze Test (HW)
  5. Essen die Deutschen gesund? (HW)

May you all have a blessed week. Take care 🙂

Kind regards,

M. Abela Bugeja

Dear students,

It’s the last week of May and our tenth week of online learning. If you’re reading this, you made it this far! Well done! 🙂

Year 9

Kleidung was last week’s theme. We revised the basic clothing items, practiced the Akkusativ articles and adjective endings and listened to German teenagers describing their favourite clothes. This week is all about shopping (Kleidung einkaufen): What do we find in a typical shopping mall (Kaufhaus)? How do we engage ourselves in a conversation with the shopkeeper when buying clothes? 2. Notes: Im Kleidergeschäft (notes)
  3. Dialoge ordnen (HW)
  4. Kaufhaus (HW)
  5. Adjektivendungen2 (HW)

Year 10

Last week we revised the parts of the body in German and focused on phrases related to illnesses and pain. It was more about vocabulary. Now it’s time to put the learnt expressions into context and by the end of this week you should be able to do a conversation in German with the doctor. Please watch my recorded video with explanation and do this week’s tasks. You need to download the following files:

  1. Video: Yr 10 – 25.05.20 (explanation)

Wishing you all a great week ahead. Take care 🙂

Kind regards,

German from home during 9th week of school closure

Dear students,

I trust this message finds you well. We are now in our ninth week of online learning. A massive well done to all those students who have kept in touch and who have sent in their work on a regular basis! 🙂 With regards to those few students, who have never contacted me, I tell them that it is never too late to start again. 🙂 If you need my help, just send me an e-mail on michela.bugeja@ilearn.edu.mt and I’ll guide you step by step, just as I did with your classmates.

Year 9

Last week we started off our new chapter Unterwegs in der Stadt (Out and About) by revising shops and other buildings found in our hometown. You also had to write about various activities that you can pursue in your city/village. This week we are moving on to Kleidung (clothes). We will revise the basic clothing items, learn an important grammar rule (Akkusativ) and listen to interviews with German teenagers about their favourite clothes. It is of utmost importance that you watch the recorded video with my explanation before you start your HW. For this week you need to download the following (the first three are reference material & the last three are HW tasks):

  1. Video: Yr9 – 18.05.20 (explanation)

  3. Adjektivendungen im Akkusativ (notes)
  4. Adjektivendungen (HW)
  5. Hören: Interview mit Julia (HW)
  6. Mein liebtes Kleidungsstück (HW)

Year 10

Gesund leben (healthy living) is our next chapter. This week we are revising the parts of the body in German, but our main focus will be that on expressions and phrases related to illnesses and pain. How do we explain to our doctor how we are feeling in German? What is the doctor’s advice? In my recorded video, specifically in the introduction, I make reference to the term Heilmethoden (healing methods). Perhaps I did not elaborate much on this. Different Heilmethoden could be Medizin & Antibiotika (medicine & antibiotics), Naturheilmittel (natural remedies), Meditation & Yoga, Akupunktur (acupuncture), Aromatherapie (aromatheraphy) and Bewegung und Sport (keeping fit). I also encouraged you to have a look at the youtube video “Krank sein” found on the Teleskola website. I downloaded it for you. For this week you need the following material:

  1. Video: Yr 10 – 18.05.20 (explanation)
  2. Beim Arzt (notes)
  3. Youtube video: krank sein (video with notes)
  4. Einleitung: Introduction (HW)
  5. Krank sein (HW)
  6. Husten und Schnupfen (HW)

Hope you have a positive week ahead.

M. Abela Bugeja

German from home during seventh week of school closure

Dear students,

Today I would like to start my message with this quote, “Success is the sum of small efforts, repeated day-in and day-out” (Robert Collier). Why am I quoting this gentleman? During the past week, I saw lack of input and it’s a pity as you had been doing great in the previous weeks. Don’t be tempted to stop working, do not give up now! If you are encountering difficulties, I need to know about them. I am here for you always 😊

Year 9

Since we have finished the chapter Essen und Trinken, for this week you have only one task. Open the attached video and listen to my short explanation. Take this opportunity to catch up on any missing HW and send it to me together with this week’s task.

  1. Video: Yr9 – 04.05.20
  2. Schreiben: E-Mail (HW)

Year 10

This week’s focus is on the PERFEKT tense, so you’ll be doing tasks related to trips/holidays which took place in the PAST. It is important to listen to my explanation, as it sheds light on some important aspects of this grammar point. You need to open the following:

  1. Video: Yr 10 – 04.05.20
  2. Perfekte Ferien (HW)
  3. Hotel Schöne Aussicht (HW)
  4. Ausflug nach Neuschwanstein (HW)

PLEASE stick to the deadline and hand in your work by Monday 11th May 2020.

Take care of yourselves and have a pleasant week.

Kind regards,

German from home during fourth week of school closure

Dear students,

First of all, let me wish you and your families a happy Easter (Frohe Ostern). May your homes be filled with joy, peace and plenty of Easter eggs 🙂

As I do every week, I would like to upload and explain the HW. Taking the Easter holidays into consideration, the deadline is in two weeks’ time, Monday 20th April 2020.

Year 9

This week’s theme is IM RESTAURANT. I am sure one day you will have the opportunity to eat in a restaurant, where German is spoken. Or else work as a waiter/waitress here in Malta, where you would need to serve tourists, who speak only German! Therefore it is important to learn how to make a proper conversation around this theme. I am attaching the video: Im Restaurant (attached below) which explains the handout Dialog im Restaurant (attached below). Listen carefully to my explanation and for HW I need you to write a similar conversation in German taking place at the restaurant. I am also giving you a reading comprehension for HW: tolle Restaurants! Leseverstehen (attached below). You need to read the four adverts and answer the questions with A, B, C or D.

So, to summarise everything, I need to you to download the following:

  1. Video: Im Restaurant
  2. Dialog im Restaurant
  3. Tolle Restaurants! Leseverstehen

Year 10

Finally we’re moving on to the next chapter: REISEN – TRAVELLING. Although travelling is not even possible at the moment, in this new topic we get to explore different destinations and holiday ideas, whilst learning new German vocabulary and expressions. Attached below you may find the following HW tasks:

  1. Welt & Umwelt (The world around us – match the words with the pictures)
  2. Urlaubsideen (Holiday ideas – match the phrases with the pictures)
  3. Fahrradtouren (Bicycle tours – Reading Comprehension: choose A, B or C)
  4. Reiterferien (Horse riding holidays – x2 reading comprehension tasks)

Well done for using different apps to keep in touch with me. Remember, hard work pays off!

Frohe Ostern und bleibt gesund!
